5 Romance TTRPGs for February

5 Romance TTRPGs for February

'tis the season of love, and I thought I'd list out all the love and romance TTRPGs I could find. Just flirting with the homies is all

The faster we start, the faster we can get to the smooching...

FIREBRANDS/STEWPOT

Gonna dump these two games here cause they are similar - Stewpot was written by Takuma Okada and was based of off Firebrands system of prompts. I'd say Stewpot is less flirty, and Firebrands by Meguey Baker & D. Vincent Baker is ABSOLUTELY JUST AN EXCUSE TO FLIRT WITH THE TABLE.

When I was first asked to play this, I was pitched a game about mechs and fighting and space combat... only to be flirted with by a noble who wanted a Barista boyfriend. Yes, you know who you are.

Firebrands and Stewpot are both diceless and GMless, which is great - no need for an arbiter for love, just raw unfiltered flirting and prompts that are collaborative, so no one gets left out. It might be a bit much for those coming from dice heavy systems, as the prompts are quite free form. Firebrands also has a lot more lore in it, so the character creation portion can take awhile, but GOD DAMN, I promise it's worth it. Never had a bad Firebrands session.

Stewpot is based in a more generic fantasy setting where the primary goal is to build a tavern as retired adventurers, but the flirting prompt section is still there so I've included the game here.

Both games have insane replayability due to their sheer numbers of mini-games/prompts. I would like to also try mixing some of the games from Stewpot into Firebrands one day as well. The games can technically end when you want it to, and epilogues are in built (something I wish more TTRPGs had, in general).

If you're also somehow super into libraries for some reason, I have a librarian version that I wrote here called Bookbound. This will most probably be the longest entry here, simply because it's the game I've played the most.

Pasion de las Pasiones

Now that's a name that screams romance. It's a silly game, perfect as a one-shot when you need a break from killing monsters and saving the world. This game is about recreating your favorite telenovelas, episode by episode.

As a Filipino guy living in Singapore, I grew up around these kinda shows. EVERYWHERE IN LIKE... A MILLION DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. English, Tagalog, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Malay, and Tamil dramas. YOU ALL LOVE IT. I don't get it, and will accept that I may never understand the pleasure of telenovelas, but I ain't stopping you.

Simply enough, this game is Powered by the Apocalypse, which makes total sense. A 2d6 system with a simple mechanic of 2 to 6 being a fail, 7 to 9 being a mixed success, and 10+ being a massive success provides just enough chance to fail forward (of course there are +/- mechanics, but just get the book and read it yourself). Exactly what telenovelas are - failing forward. Get caught cheating, but the character is super charming. Maybe convince them to forgive you. Fight about having secrets, find out that it's actually a secret proposal that you just spoiled for yourself, and almost ruin your almost wedding. Failing forward.

This game is REALLY easy to pick up, and has the potential to be VERY role play heavy, or relatively mechanical for those who need to get comfortable first.

Monsterhearts 2

It has heart in the name, so it has to be romantic right?

For fans of Twilighty romance, re-experiencing puberty and teenage angst, this game is for you. High school love is just amazing for roleplay, and this game has been pretty popular for people who wanna explore queer themes as well.

This game is also Powered by the Apocalypse, but has a completely different vibe. Way more hormonal. And bitey. Well, please don't bite each other in game. Unless it's like Session Zeroed that y'all wanna bite each other. You do you.

The immediate kinda story that pops up in my head are The Vampire Diaries style of episodic monster drama - it's really great for people who want to explore parts of their identity in a safe (and allegorically monstrous) environment. Not a long page here, but definitely try this game for sure. One of the top picks personally, from this list.

Speaking of exploration and queerness...

Thirsty Sword Lesbians

Another game that uses the Apocalypse Engine - what can I say, falling in love is about falling forward.

This game is as honest as it's name - if you wanna be gay, you wanna wield a sword, and you wanna hook up with your enemies, this game is exactly that. The level of romance in this game is really up to the GM and players, as it works well as an adventure campaign as well, but obviously we're suggesting some smooching and love making when you try this game out.

This game is extremely popular and has quite a few pre-written options, making this one of the more content available games on this list. If you're looking for a flirty game, but you/your GM also likes to have more material to prep with, this is the game to choose.

Star Crossed

I'll admit, I haven't played this one. What I have played however, is it's horror cousin Dread. Both of these games use Jenga Towers as the primary mechanic. What better way to simulate high tension moments than by having to pull one (or a few!) jenga blocks. When the tower falls, your characters have to act on their feelings!

This game is simple, quick, and is great to repeat a few times. It is a two-player only game, so couples, best friends, and homies can totally snatch this up and run a quick game when the rest of the party fails to show up. They do have an expansion (?) (Space Station Fobolex) that let's you play with between 4 to 20 players (which is CRAZY to me) if you want to do more of a speed dating kinda sitch.

Conclusions

Hope you found something here that'll help you flirt with your friends. Don't forget to always keep lines and veils or other safety tools available, as we're all here to have fun flirting, and not get grossed out by it.

Happy romancing your friends, and don't forget; who's awesome? You're awesome. Muax xoxo bb luv you <3
